Hey, So here I am about to tell you about my Top Ten favourite English songs, now let me tell you, a little while ago, I didn’t like them that much, but I was introduced to some great music recently and have fallen in love with some songs. I have a very long playlist of English Music in a very short time, and I am hung on it, listening to it on loop. Each song on this list is handpicked after a lot of contemplation, which ones to include and which ones to exclude was a time-consuming decision. So, Enjoy!

It is said that Paris is the city of romance and fashion capital of the world. I agree to that. It’s been seven years when I first visited this city just a month before my first wedding anniversary as we were supposed to celebrate our first anniversary with family in India. I was very excited (who won’t be) after all it was my first visit to the French capital which I have been seeing only on television and first time comes only once in life. We boarded Thalys, the superfast train plying between Brussels and Paris and duration of the journey was about 1 hour 15 minutes. Let me take you to a night from my teenage….a night like many nights on the Saturday weekend…..no school tomorrow….papa has not to go to work….lazy day and lazy night…we were at a party and when it ended we all went to our Fiat Padmini and started for home. Sitting in the back of the Cream colored Fiat, high on food and company, tired but content as the after effects of the party, smiling to myself as the wind caressed my face blowing my hair through the car window, I watched the moon as it seemed to be moving with our car. Deserted highway, zero traffic, shining roads under the street lights….Delhi looked peaceful back then as my father drove the car towards home in an amiable silence. A silence only was broken by the sweet melody of songs playing on the stereo of the car. Cassettes, bless them, good old cassettes as they wind and unwind playing all melodies recorded by papa. I close my eyes as the songs play one by one and that was the time I fell in love with old golden Hindi Bollywood music.
The cassette used to have two sides, A and B. Each side used to have almost six songs. I am taking you through the A side.
The first song on the track was :
Song : Ramaiya Vastavaiyya

Music Composer: Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal, Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi
This song had the bitter truth of love vs the world. It made you think of the two sides of one coin as the line “Tu Aur Thaa, Tera Dil Aur ThaTere Mann Mein Ye Meethhee Kataaree N Thi”. Ramaiya vastavaiya is Telegu for respectfully asking, “Ram, won’t you come?” Legend has it that music composer Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi, who grew up in Hyderabad where Telugu is a dominant language, had been demonstrating his composition to director Raj Kapoor using placeholder Telugu lyrics. When Raj Kapoor heard the tune, he loved it so much, he wanted the Telugu title lyrics to be included in the final version ! But all that aside, the real reason everyone has adored “Ramaiya Vastavaiya” for generations is simply that it’s so darn catchy. If you hear it once, you’ll be humming it all day !

The humming voice of Hemant Da has a soothing, calming effect which feels like a lullaby, washing you over in a drowsy bliss. Oh My God ! “Phir aag birha ki mat lagaana ki jal main rakh ho chuki hoon….ye rakh maathe pe maine rakh li ” It used to make me cry even at that small age….the selfless love…the song emphasizes the ascetic nature of their devotion..the hidden sentiments. My mother softly humming along the songs making them, even more, softer.
“Chhupa Lo Yun Dil” employs a rare paucity of musical instrumentation: from the opening chimes of temple manjira to the traditional bansuri echoing alone in the empty cinematic space, the song emphasizes the ascetic nature of their devotion. To match, the romantic lyrics are infused with religious imagery, and director Asit Sen carefully constructs shots that instead of bringing the hero and heroine closer together, in fact, emphasize their distance. “Chhupa Lo Yun Dil” is one of the most moving Hemant Kumar-Lata Mangeshkar duets of all time.

What a way to express love…..what a voice Mohammad Rafi had….such yearning and such longing. Telling his lover that even the pain inflicted by her would be a favor to him, but he can’t bear estrangement.
This song ranks among my all-time favorites rendered by the inimitable Mohammed Rafi. This touching melody rooted in raga Yaman Kalyan with heartfelt words expressing the beautiful struggles of unconditional love is perfectly suited for Mohammed Rafi’s delicate, velvety vocals. Shammi Kapoor’s on-screen portrayal–especially that sensual look in his eyes–adds to Rafi’s romantic rendition.
The fourth one was :
Song : Lag Ja Gale Ki Phir Ye Haseen Raat
Movie/album: Woh Kaun Thi? (1964)
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar
Song Lyricists: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
Music Composer: Madan Mohan Kohli
The moon seemed so much more romantic and I was thinking about love. Through an expression of carpe diem philosophy, these lyrics encourage listeners to live in the moment and cherish their loved ones now before the opportunity escapes in the future. The beautiful simplicity of these lyrics is enhanced by a sublime melody crafted by Madan Mohan–one of his career’s finest. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice is also at its heavenly best here, and her flawless rendition takes this song to the next level.

My eyes would well up to the grainy voice and music of S.D.Burman. A song of devotion, of Surrender all in the name of love…..and then came the lines that turned my heart over…..”Mann ki kitaab se Tum, Mera naam hi mita dena, gun to na tha koi bhi, avgun mere bhula dena” hats off to lyricist Shailendra. It is not a very intelligent thing to sing a song sung by S.D.Burmanda. The reason is that he had a unique gaayki, a unique timbre, and unique tonalities.
The sixth song was :
Song : Hum Tere Pyar Mein Sara Alam
Movie/album: Dil Ek Mandir (1963)
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar
Song Lyricists: Hasrat Jaipuri
Music Composer: Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal, Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi
Ohhhhhh what a song…..seems like the epitome of love…..Hasrat Jaipuri wrote it in a painful ache. What a scene as the mesmerizing Meena Kumari sings it on a Sitar for an ailing husband played by thin mustached actor Raj Kumar. The song that says….love is forever…absolute and forever. A male poet makes a female protagonist start singing about loving cages instead of people (“yah Pyaar Kaa pinjraa man bhaayaa“) or about harboring a wish to die at her husband’s feet (“ab in charanoin mein dam nikle, bas itnii aur tamanna hai“), you can’t help but think that something’s not quite right. However, two things are definitely right about this song: Lata Mangeshkar’s angelic rendition and Shankar-Jaikishan’s exquisitely crafted melody. Even if the lyrics are too extreme for your liking, the artistic beauty of this song is still preserved in the way Lata’s voice drips with pathos as she navigates through this delicate tune.
The car kept weaving through the complex network of Delhi roads as the cassette rolled in and half an hour went by just like that. No one spoke in the whole journey, everyone was retrospecting, lost in their own thoughts, in a world of beauty. The fiat stopped in front of a home. But I would keep sitting, lost in the moon, the music, and the golden voices that echoed in my very soul. Papa would very lovingly coax me to come out so that I can sleep in my bed instead of the car. But it wasn’t sleeping that made me close my eyes with a satisfied smile on my face. It was the after effects of the very first brush of romance and love, romance with meaningful, soulful lyrics and romance with timeless and everlasting music. This was side A, in another post, on another day, I will take you through the side B of the same cassette as I will travel down the memory lane once again.
